Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young girl. Her aunt was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to engage people. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in university. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the waste belonging to one of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
